TWINNING
The basis of twinning is deeply rooted in friendship with
the main aims being to enable different communities to exchange experience
of their history, culture and contemporary lifestyle thus increasing mutual
understanding, tolerances and respect. Over the years twinning schemes
have continued to weave an extremely close knit fabric within European
community and elsewhere, which is growing stronger all the time.
The Billericay Twinning Association was formed early 1998,
as a non-local authority organisation.
to promote and foster friendship and understanding between the people of
Billericay and other similar communities overseas.
The Association is recognised by the Local
Government International Bureau (LGIB), the Authority responsible for twinning
matters in Europe, Sister Cities International (SCI), a body with similar
responsibilities in America and has the support, by association, of the
Billericay Town Council whose Chairman is its ex-officio President
but receives no financial support from the Town Council.
Fishers in Indiana USA is the first 'twin' with which the
Association has developed strong links. A second twinning was agreed with Chauvigny, France and the final charter
was signed in France in
July 2005.
Visits funded by the individuals who traveled to Fishers
and Chauvigny prepared the ground for these "twinnings" to be developed,
particularly in the field of education which is considered to
be an aspect of twinning of paramount importance.
We are looking to the future for our young peoples' sake by
the formation of these links with the people of Fishers, Chauvigny and, in time, with other
communities.
The Association produces newsletters throughout
the year
which is circulated to all its members and published on this website.
